Bastardy Documents
Below is a transcript of the recognizance that was in a newspaper. (either James Patchett's father or brother) Joseph Patchett is his "surety" -- [definition: a person who takes responsibility for another's performance of an undertaking, for example their appearing in court or the payment of a debt. OR money given to support an udertaking that someone will perform a duty, pay thier debts, tec.; a guarantee]

Below is the General Quarter Sessions document that told me who g-g-grandfather James VAMPLEW's natural father was. There were two pages to this document.
"....do hereby certify that the said Mary Vamplew having been delivered of a Bastard Child on Sunday the sixth day of October infant... the said James Patchet therefore humbly prayeth that the said Justices assembled as afresaid, will be pleased to respite his said Recognizance. Given under our Hands this twelfth Day of October 1816."
James PATCHETT was ordered to pay £50. There is his "surety" Joseph PATCHETT mentioned in this document who was also paying £50.

In the page below:
"WHEREAS Mary Vamplew of Ranby in the said parts singlewoman, in, and by, her voluntary Examination taken in Writing, and upon Oath, before the Reverend Thomas Roc and John Mournsey clerks two ------- of His Majesty's Justices of the Peace in and for the said Parts, hath declared, that she is with Child or Children, and that the said Child or Children is or are likely to be born a Bastard or Bastards, and to be chargeable to the said Parish of Ranby and that the above bounden James Patchett is the Father of the said Child. or children."
Check out the "mark" of James and of Joseph!
