On the family chart below, click on the PORTEOUS male line for more birth/baptism information on each person. You may also click on Mary Ann VAMPLEW or the VAMPLEW male line for more information on each person.
Not all persons on this chart are linked to more information. I am concentrating on the main PORTEOUS and VAMPLEW family's lineage first. Collateral line information will be added later.

Rockefeller,
Lake County, Illinois [present-day Mundelein] son of Wm D. Porteous and Carrie

It is interesting that my dad wasn't named at the time of his birth. Now that is another search -- when was he finally named? And was his given name ever registered? His two sisters weren't officially registered until many years later.

Unknown place of baptism, but I'm strongly leaning towards Wyham cum Cadeby, Lincolnshire, England. I have taken several trips to Salt Lake City Family History Library in search of his baptism and burial, but so far I have not found a thing. This
information is in the early stages of research and could change as more information
is harvested from the Parish Records and other sources.

Coningsby Parish Register image: baptised as an "adult" 11 Mar 1860, Coningsby, Lincolnshire England - daughter of James and Ann Vamplew.

New information for research has emerged, taking out a couple bricks from that thick wall surrounding my VAMPLEW family history. Who would have thought the name could have been spelled BAMPFLEW! That stretches the imagination, but not unheard of in this wonderful world of genealogy. More information and documentation will be added as it surfaces.
Please contact me if anything is stated incorrectly or you would have more information to add. Please also state your sources along with any information.
James VAMPLEW

Thornton by Horncastle, Lincolnshire, England - son of Mary Bampflew.
In the Thornton Parish Register image below, you can just make out that g-g-grandfather James is recorded as "Illegitimate son of" Mary BAMPFLEW at Thornton and "born at Ranby"

For several years now, I believed his father was James Vamplew since that is who was recorded as "father" in g-g-grandparents James and Ann's marriage record. As it turned out that James was Mary's brother! My assumption was dashed when I found this baptism record in the Thornton Parish Register during my first trip to Family History Library at Salt Lake City, Utah. I knew the entry was his because two census entries for his place of birth was Ranby. Now I knew who his mother was, but who was the father?
A fellow online researcher sent me a list of Vamplew's "Bastardy Recognizances" she had accumulated during her research. I was unfamiliar with these files. It was quite interesting to see her list because low and behold, there was Mary's charge against the natural father -- James PATCHETT! I quickly sent away for the Bastardy Certificate. This revelation unleashed another family to include in my family history. I am casually collecting information on the Patchetts of Tattershall. I have already met with a descendent of James when we were in Lincolnshire in 2007.
Mary didn't marry James Patchett. [James PATCHETT information will be added at a later date.]
