William Dennis PORTEOUS
[PORTUS]
Died 18
May 1927
Mundelein,
Illinois. Buried in Ivanhoe Cemetery.
| Libertyville
Independent Register, Thurs. May 19, 1927 W.D. Porteous, well known in the village of Mundelein and the surrounding community, died suddenly Wed. [May 18] afternoon in the yard of his home on West Maple Ave. An alarm of fire was sounded when a blaze was discovered on the roof of the Porteous home. He ran around the house and secured a ladder. As he attempted to raise it to the eaves of the house he toppled over. Fred Getz, an engineer for the Public Service Co. saw Mr. Porteous fall and rushed to him and administered first aid, but he was beyond help. At the coroner’s inquest held last night, Coroner Taylor expressed the opinion that death was instantaneous. His health for some time had not been good and he has been taking treating for heart trouble. This was given as the cause of death. Mrs. Porteous was prostrated when told that her husband had passed away, and a physician attended her. Mr. Porteous was one of the best known men in Mundelein, where he had resided for about 40 years. For many years he was police magistrate of the village and |
resigned
this spring in order to devote his time to other work. When the village
was incorporated in 1909 he was named village treasurer and had held that
office ever since. Since the big expansion in Mundelein and the work of
many public improvements started, Mr. Porteous had given much of his time
to special assessment work. Mr. Porteous was born in England but came to this country when about 3 years of age, moving to Diamond Lake with his parents and after his marriage, making his home in Mundelein. He was about 60 years old. Besides his widow he is survived by 1 son, Carroll, at home, and 2 daughters, Mrs. M. A. Chandler of Mundelein and Mrs. Frank Druba of Waukegan. He also leaves a brother Jesse J. Porteous of Libertyville and a sister Mrs. Clem Small, who is now on the way home from California and is not aware of her brother’s death. Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock standard time Sat. afternoon at the home in Mundelein, conducted by the Rev. Mr. Jevne, pastor of First Congregational church in Mundelein. Burial will be in Ivanhoe cemetery and the Modern Woodmen of America will have charge of the service at the grave, Mr. Porteous being a member of Acme Camp of Libertyville. |

It was no unusual sight to see him on his daily walks surrounded by a group of children each clambering for the place closest to him, and his happiest hours were spent wen this surrounded[sic]. Two weeks ago, in Company with Mr. and Mrs. Small, he made the trip to Garfield, Kansas via automobile, and to all appearances, stood the trip the best of the three. While visiting at the home of his nephew, who lives on the old Porteous homestead, he with others in the home, was stricken with ptomain poison and being |
of
such advanced age could not throw off the poison, and died, after 18 hours
of intense illness, on Saturday, July 18, in the same place in which his

of that immediate family. With him at the time of his death, were his

Mary Ann VAMPLEW
Died
10 Dec 1921
Mundelein,
Illinois. Buried in Diamond Lake Cemetery.
| Mundelein
obit: Mary Ann Van Plew was born in Lincolnshire, England, December 16, 1841, died Dec. 10, 1921, lacking 6 days of having reached the age of 80 years. In 1863 [we now know the marriage date was 1864] she was united in marriage to John Porteous. In 1870 they left their friends and relatives in England and sailed for America, settling in Diamond Lake near which locality they have since made their home. Besides her husband, four children, Mrs. C. G. Small and W. D. Porteous of Area, J. J. Porteous of Libertyville and B. F. Porteous who resides on the homestead, 21 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren survive her, besides a brother James Van Plew of Wheaton and a sister and brother risiding in England. She was a kind and loving wife and mother, ever ready and willing to lend a helping hand whenever help was needed. She has endured what appears to be more than the average share of sorrow |
and
trouble, having laid to rest six out of her family of ten children. The
brave and [un]complaining manner in which she met her sorrow showed the
sterling worth of her character and her faith and trust in her Maker.
She has been a great sur[viv]er during the past few months, bearing in
patience. She will be greatly missed by those she leaves behind but her
greatest wish was to “go home” where there is no more pain
or sorrow and none could ... or this week. The funeral service of Mrs. John Porteous were held Tuesday afternoon at the home [of her daughter Georgiana], her six grandsons acting as pallbearers. Burial at Diamond Lake Cemetery. Rev. Barnett of Grayslake conducted the services. One very touching and impressive incident of the burial was the way the snow came. Just at the close of the services covering every particle of soil about the burial grounds looking like a mantle of purity sent down from above to blot out all worldly sordidness. |
